Baptist’s Coral Way Freestanding Emergency Department (FSED) is a 35,760-square-foot, 2-story facility that improves community access to healthcare and establishes an additional entry point to the Baptist South Florida system.

The progressive design aligns with branding strategies and reflects Baptist South Florida’s quality of care. Diverging from the initial prototype, this FSED grew in scope to include a second floor for medical office shell space, yet needed to control its footprint, requiring a more efficient and compact solution. Site constraints resulted in the stacked building form.

The ground floor layout is based on level of acuity, moving from front to back with the least acute patients near the front. This will reduce circulation conflicts and promote efficiency. The concentric center core where nurse stations, medications and treatment rooms are located was stretched longitudinally to provide the flexibility required to accommodate the treatment rooms.
